As many of you know, Simon is determined to create an ice rink for the school this year. He started on the basket ball court, with a crew of eager snow shovelers banking the edges. But that wasn't big enough. He received a donation of a 30x70 rink from Sharon Simon. Students were enlisted, slopes checked, parents enlisted, websites checked. Everyday he's out at the rink before I even get to school. He's out at lunch. He's out during specials. Always, he's clucking, shoveling, observing, trouble shooting. He is, in a word, obsessed.
Why do I share this about my beloved colleague? Because he's actually modeling an incredibly valuable set of skills for the Elmquoias. He has a passion. He's persistent. He's getting others involved. He has to find humor (a lot of it). He's risking a public failure. He's finding solutions and trying different things. Most of all, he's showing how much fun it can be to care and to really take something on. I have no idea if we'll end up with an ice rink this year -- to me, it's immaterial. What's much more important is that we'll have had the dream of the ice rink (and the legend to tell about it).
