I LOVE that we use narratives as our major form of assessment, but it sure is time consuming to write those 40 pages or so. My apologies for the long absence from blogging.
I'll use this post to bring you up to date on our happenings since we returned from winter break.
Honors project/fourth grade project: The students are off and running. Fifth graders have chosen topics, completed know/wonder charts, coded their questions, decided on star questions, found resources and begun taking notecards. Fourth graders are working on choosing star questions and finding resources.
Math: We're studying probability. The 4/5 classes are rotating among the three teachers, taking part in two-day lessons using spinners (with Cathy), dice (with Michelle) and tiles in a bag/coin drop (with Amy). We teachers have discussed our shared goals for this unit. After each class does all three lessons, we'll have a menu of activities designed to help everyone apply their understandings and challenge themselves.
Theme: We began with a few days of discussion and data gathering on gender differences. This was prompted by JH's comment during our role play that girls could take on male roles without comment, but it was a big deal for boys to take female roles. We've had fascinating discussions about gender roles today and how they've changed over time.
Now we've moved on to engineering. I'll post about that theme next. Here, I'll say that I decided to put the students in same-sex engineering teams in order to continue to push their thinking about gender.
PE: Floor hockey! The Robins LOVE floor hockey. We also took a ramble with the Herons last week out into the fields and along the creek. Made me think of Wolf Ridge!
