On Saturday evening, I attended a really fun event to celebrate PCCS alums who are about to graduate from Arcadia or the High School. The event was organized by Amy Haslett. Teacher Michelle shared a few memories with the seniors from their time back in the Elms and Sequoias - the respective 4/5 classes we both taught back long ago when these young folk were at our school. We also dug out old copies of the literary magazine and entertained the crowd by playing "Guess who wrote this poem in Kindergarten"...always a favorite with the parents!
The real highlight of the evening though, was when former PCCS parents Alyssa and Tom Leonard, Bo Aylin and Peter Day-Diggins (supported ably on bass by Joel Cooper) reconvened the Prairie Creek band and played long into the evening. While enjoying the music and marveling at the fact that these talented folks pulled together this band for a group of PCCS alums, it occurred to me, once again, that we really do have the most remarkable parent and volunteer support at our school. It is a unique kind of generosity of time, expertise and financial support that has been an enduring characteristic of the school through the three decades that we have been in existence. It is a willingness to go above and beyond to support our teachers and children that has been at the heart of what makes our community tick.
Our Volunteer Appreciation coffee is a very small token of our gratitude to all parents and volunteers. We hope that a lot of folks will be able to join us to listen to the orchestra and enjoy a coffee with us.
It is very important that we schedule in a time that we, the staff and the children, properly reflect on how lucky we are to have such committed help in our work. This support manifests itself at every level - from parents and community members who serve on our board in a governance capacity to the parent who stops by, unobserved, to quietly re-stack books in our library. Each and every minute of volunteer time is vital to the richness of our children's learning experience.
Our children will all participate in the creation of a giant THANK YOU! poster for our appreciation event. An event like this helps our children to develop an awareness of the many people who contribute to making their world at Prairie Creek so wonderful and acknowledge that in concrete ways. Gratitude matters! Our small event with the gift of music by our orchestra and the conversation with their teachers about the role of parents and volunteers in our school life increases their awareness of the role others play in their education.
I know I am very guilty of not saying it often enough so, regardless of whether you can join our small appreciation event, THANK YOU! for all you do.
